Welcome to First Unitarian 

Founded by abolitionist and suffragette Caroline Severance in 1877, First Unitarian Church is a place where activists, artists, and volunteers come together, offering community and service in the heart of Los Angeles.

Since 2018, First Unitarian has been entirely lay-led, meaning that membership shares responsibility for church operations, running Sunday services, and caring for one another. Without a full-time minister, you may encounter one of our members or a guest minister at the pulpit, or perhaps the poet laureate of Los Angeles, the mayor of West Hollywood, or an academic from USC.  Live music accompanies service, from Bach to Bowie, followed by lunch in our courtyard.

Outside of service you’ll find a number of opportunities to find community, from our writing group, to the philosophy circle, our music ensembles, film club, crafts group, food bank, and tutoring program - to name just a few.

Our membership is bilingual (with services live-interpreted in Spanish), multigenerational, and multiracial, fully embracing our Unitarian values of inclusion, justice, and compassion.  All are welcome.
